“Nothing short of seismic” is the best way to describe the Caribbean hotel performance in the long awaited Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards for 2016.

To start, T+L trimmed their list from 36 hotels in 2015 to the Top 25 in 2016. This automatically knocked 11 potential hotels from the list — a 30% reduction. And there were other surprises as well, including:

  • Five of the Top 10 hotels in this year’s list didn’t even make the list of 36 in 2015. New to the list (and absent from 2015) are the following properties:

1 Kamalame Cay, Andros, Bahamas
2 Curtain Bluff, St. John’s, Antigua
4 The House, St. James, Barbados
6 The Somerset on Grace Bay, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos
8 GoldenEye, Oracabesssa, Jamaica

  • Talk about seismic — only 8 out of 36 hotels from 2015 were able to repeat and make the list of the Caribbean’s best hotels again in 2016. On both lists are properties that are consistently recognized on nearly every Caribbean-wide survey and include:

2 3 Jade Mountain, St. Lucia
16 5 Round Hill Hotel & Villas, Montego Bay, Jamaica
8 7 Ladera, St. Lucia
12 9 Jamaica Inn, Ocho Rios, Jamaica
23 10 Eden Rock, Baie de Saint Jean, St. Bart’s
29 13 Anse Chastanet Resort, St. Lucia
7 17 Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, Nevis and St. Kitts
5 22 The Reefs Resort & Club, Bermuda

  • By process of elimination this leaves a total of 17 out of 25 Caribbean hotels that are new to the T+L World’s Best Awards this year. In other words, over two-thirds of all the hotels making this year’s Top 25 did not make an appearance on last year’s Top 36. Newcomers include:

Everyone knows the hotel industry is fiercely competitive. This is not only true in the marketplace but, as T+L shows, also in the all-important awards competition.201112-b-worldsbest-logo

Awards from leading travel industry magazines like Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler can play an important role in creating awareness and helping a hotel get placed in the consideration set for both vacationers and travel agents. And when a hotel is not in the consideration set the likelihood of getting booked is nil.

Congratulations to all the hotels — old and new — that made this year’s list of T+L’s Best Hotels in the Caribbean. Good show!

Make the most of it while you can.
