This month we’re featuring Sheryl Nance-Nash, Associate Editor of Upscale Magazine. Sheryl specializes in travel, business and personal finance. She began her reporting career at the New York Law Journal and also held several staff positions at Daily Finance and Money before transitioning into a freelance role. She now writes for several publications including U.S. News & World Report, The Daily Meal, Reader’s Digest, amNewYork, Oyster.com, Travelzoo, Orbitz, The Tennessean and Williamsport Sun-Gazette. When she’s not on the dance floor, you can find her revealing where you should travel and helping you get your finances in order by reporting on money lessons, trends and news.

Q: How many stories do you write per week?

The work load varies. I’m typically writing about 5 stories a week.

Q: Everyone has different habits. What is the first thing you do before you start writing? 

The first thing I do is say a prayer. Just kidding. Usually I stall, check Facebook, check e-mail. Then I gather myself and hit it hard.

Q: What is your favorite destination and why?

It is hard to say, I have found something to love about everywhere I have traveled. I must say though, that my recent trip to Kenya and Zanzibar for a safari was absolutely incredible, exceeding all expectations on many levels!

Q: When you get to travel, what excites you the most? 

I think what excites me most is the unknown. You never know what you’re going to see, who you’re going to meet. It is the potential that you will have a life changing encounter that gets me going.

Q: Can you tell us more about your business Inkwell Communications? 

I started Inkwell Communications in 1999 as I was preparing to transition from being a full-time employee to freelancing. Inkwell Communications offers writing, editing, fact-checking and public relations services.

Q: What is a fun fact about you? 

I love to dance, dance, dance. Back in the day, I was known for going out dancing while I was working full-time and going to school in the evenings. I would leave school and hit the dance floor.

Q: What is your ideal pitch?

The ideal pitch is one that is timely, unique, something that I’ve never heard about or there’s a new twist. Any help I can get in a pitch to get me there is wonderful!

Q: What is the worst pitch you have ever received?

I don’t know if there is a single one that stands out. But, what annoys me is a pitch that is totally unrelated to what I cover. It is a waste of time and it taints my opinion of that person.
